The City of Guelph and a Guelph-based developer are both finalists for national awards for work related to redevelopment of brownfield sites.

Twenty-three Canadian projects in six categories are among the finalists for the 2016 Brownie Awards, which will be handed out Nov. 29 in a ceremony at a Toronto hotel.

The City of Guelph is one of four finalists in the “Reprogram – Legislation, Policy and Program Initiatives” category for guidelines the city has developed under the title “Guidelines for Development of Contaminated or Potentially Contaminated Sites.”

The Metalworks development being built by Guelph-based Fusion Homes, mostly consisting of residential condo towers on the former W.C. Wood industrial site across the river from the city core, is among five finalists in the “Renew – Redevelopment at the Community Scale” category.

“The 2016 Brownie Awards continue a long tradition of providing national recognition of the builders, innovators and visionaries who are dedicated to the rehabilitation of brownfield sites that dot cities and municipalities around the country,” a news release said. “Founded in 2001 by the Canadian Urban Institute, the Brownie Awards recognize the innovative efforts of these professionals to turn around sites that were once contaminated, underutilized and undeveloped into productive residential and commercial projects that contribute to the growth of healthy communities across Canada.”
